Resources to help K-12 social studies teachers lessen the problem of prejudice in the classroom are provided in this teaching guide. A rationale for prejudice reduction is presented. An overview of prejudice research is then provided. Most of this research indicates that prejudice is quite prevalent in society but that under certain conditions it can be reduced. Basic principles applicable to elementary and secondary classrooms that are fundamental when attempting to reduce prejudice are listed. Generic guidelines for prejudice reduction are discussed, and some preliminary steps that can be taken are presented. Specific examples of effective strategies for reducing prejudice that can be implemented in K-12 classrooms are then presented. Elementary lessons include reducing stereotypes of Native Americans, developing an accurate and balanced portrayal of Mexican Americans, and exploring religious discrimination. Secondary lessons are uncovering myths and realities about the elderly, examining social protest among minorities, and reducing stereotypes of women in non-traditional roles. An annotated listing of teacher resources concludes the guide. (RM)
