The economic impact of private higher education in Indiana was studied, as part of a larger study. For the 32 institutions covered, expenditure data were collected for faculty and staff, students, visitors, and the college itself. In 1972-1973, the 32 institutions spent $45.9 million in the state, of which $34.6 million was spent in the local communities. The 9,600 individuals employed by the 32 schools supported 20,000 jobs in the state. The average expenditure per school was approximately one million dollars; however, the totals varied considerably between schools. The overall statewide economic impact of institutions in heavily populated areas appeared to be no different from institutions in less-populated communities. Nearly 30 percent of institutional expenditures were on capital items. Faculty and staff members spent more than $50 million a year within the state, 89 percent of which was in their local communities. Students spent $38 million a year attending private colleges. About 40 percent of the schools had statewide college related expenditures that were between $2,256 and $3,000 per full-time student. Student spending levels, on an individual basis, were significantly lower in rural than in urban communities. Expenditure data for each school are provided, along with notes on the research methodology. (SW)
