The personal, academic, financial, and vocational/educational characteristics of over 6,800 students attending 32 private colleges and universities in Indiana were studied, as part of a larger study. At the time of applying to college, 49.4 percent of the students lived in Indiana. About 88 percent were 18-24 years old, and nearly 80 percent began as first-time freshmen. While 90 percent of those taking a full course load were single, 65 percent registering for under a one-half load were married. The median parental income was $15,826, and support from parents averaged $1,457. Over half of the students worked during the school year, and their average yearly earnings were $2,717. Two-thirds of the married students taking at least a half-time load received an average of $1,228 from their spouses. The median cost of tuition and fees was $1,740, and about one-third of the students borrowed an average of $1,192 for college. Business and education accounted for over a quarter of vocational choices. Close to 20 percent of students planned to pursue a doctorate, while 62 percent anticipated acquiring a graduate degree. Information on students' reasons for attending college and satisfaction with their choice is included. The study questionnaire, the Indiana Student Data Survey, is appended. (SW)
