A basic introduction to Buddhism is provided in this unit of study for high school students. The unit can be taught in social studies, geography, humanities, or religion courses. Time required is two class periods of 45 to 50 minutes each. The unit's objective is to help students gain a greater knowledge and appreciation of Buddhism and its applications and effects in the lives of Asian as well as Western believers. On day one students learn, through a lecture, about the origin and teachings of Buddha, including the four noble truths and the eightfold path to enlightenment. During the second class period, students view a slide show and learn about doctrinal conflicts and the major forms of Buddhism today. Students are encouraged to participate in classroom discussions. The unit suggests supplementary activities. For example, students look for applications of Buddhist principles in their own lives in coping with problems, visit a Buddhist temple, and learn to meditate. Quizzes are provided. (RM)
