A study was conducted to determine attitudinal change of nonhandicapped students (grades 6-8) toward the handicapped after viewing a brief 13-minute film about physically disabled children. The sample consisted of 227 middle school students enrolled in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Form O of the Attitude Towards the Disabled Persons (ATDP) scale was used as the pre- and post-test in a modified version of the Nonequivalent Control Group Design. Students in the treatment group were shown the film "The Same Inside." The results indicate that the attitudes of the treatment group were significantly more positive toward handicapped persons after viewing the film. The findings substantiated previous studies which found that exposure to carefully selected film does result in a favorable change of attitude. The results also corroborate findings in that specific and general attitudes toward handicapped persons can be significantly altered by a single, relatively short classroom presentation. The results of this study show that film is an effective technique to help meet the need of preparing nonhandicapped students to accept the handicapped in a more positive manner. (Author/CL)
