- Summary:
-
Intended to show that English teachers' activities outside the classroom enhance their regular classroom work and permit them to teach new, larger audiences, the articles in this journal issue emphasize how English teachers can reevaluate their skills and express those skills in a language that businesses understand. Some of the articles explain business itself; some describe the mechanics of consulting, freelance writing, or speaking for pay; and some, through anecdote and narrative, tell of the psychological changes that accompany the exercise of new talents. Others are humorous or poetic views of the situation. Two further themes pervade the articles. First, that changes come gradually and require considerable soul searching and preparation, especially since personal histories that end with a new job or an increased income usually begin with extra work or no pay at all. Second, that attitude is everything. Among some of the specific topics discussed are job resource files, what employers in business look for in a resume, magazine writing, and homebound instruction.
