This booklet contains the second in a series of three interdisciplinary units which focus specifically on the Pacific Ocean and its surrounding countries. The unit, intended primarily for lower to middle secondary level, consists of readings and interdisciplinary activities (science, art, social studies, English, and home economics) presented in two parts. Part 1 examines fishing in traditional societies (salmon fishing in the Puget Sound area long ago, aboriginal fishing culture, the fish hook, and changing traditions in the Solomon Islands) and fishing in industrialized societies (the Japanese tuna fleet, Australian prawning, and salmon fishing in Oregon). The second part focuses on what happens after fish are caught, considering marketing and processing, ways of preserving fish (chilling/freezing, salting, drying, smoking, pickling, and canning), and the social, cultural, and moral issues involved in the consumption of fish. A case study on the effect of changing diet in Tonga is included. (JN)
