This study examined the characteristics and attitudes of experienced fitness patrons in order to explore the motivations and characteristics of persons who have chosen to incorporate aerobic activities into their daily lives. Using the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale and the Physical Fitness Profile (developed for this study), a profile of physical fitness patrons was generated. Within the sample of exercisers (N=252), subgroups could not be differentiated by such demographic markers as age or sex, but only by such lifestyle indicators as exercise history or plans for continuing exercise. The exercisers, located in a large southern city, were more homogeneous with respect to self-esteem than the general population, and had significantly lower self-esteem scores as a group than the general population. Persons new to fitness training had elevated levels of self-esteem relative to fitness center patrons, while persons who had exercised for 6 to 12 months reported the lowest levels of self-esteem. Further study should be conducted regarding the apparent lowering and other changes in self-esteem among fitness center patrons. (Author/CB)
