The guide begins with a discussion of the basis for science education by focusing on two questions: (1) Why teach science?, and (2) What is science? It considers science teaching and matching instruction to the learner, describes objectives for K-12 science curriculum, and analyzes decision making, providing recommendations and outlines. A process for developing a science curriculum is outlined, including worksheets for curriculum development, establishing parameters, identifying themes and learning activities, scheduling, and refining. The need for evaluation is stressed and test and item quality is reviewed. Current issues such as context of science teaching, K-6 time allocations, computers, careers, and equity in science education are considered. The curriculum is broken down by grade level: (1) K-2; (2) 3-6; (3) middle/junior high school; and (4) senior high school. At each level there is an overview, a discussion of curriculum development, a problem solving section, an elaboration of science knowledge for that level, an examination of the nature of science, a section on science, technology, and society, and a guide to evaluation.
