The general ability factor (G), as enunciated by Charles Spearman in the model of cognitive functioning, has been the foundation of psychometric theory and test making practices for 80 years. Through these decades, some psychologists disagreed with this theory, especially Godfrey Thompson and E. L. Thorndike. Nevertheless, various aptitude tests were developed to yield a single score for representing an examinee's general level of cognitive functioning. By 1930 a reaction had set in both on the side of theory and of practice, and tests were developed for specific abilities such as clerical and mechanical skills. In the period between 1940-1980, the concept of general ability was not completely ignored, although it was not emphasized as much; the focus was on multidimensionality of test and specificity in test validity. G refuses to die, however, and has risen like a Phoenix from the ashes. By analyzing several data sets from popular tests, the conclusion can be drawn that the preponderance of the prediction that is possible from any set of tests is attributable to the general ability, and that empirical G lies at the heart of the prediction of real-life performances.
