Description [Washington, D.C.] : Distributed by ERIC Clearinghouse, 1984

This manual suggests and describes recommended reference services and sources for a small hospital library. Focusing on reference services, the first section includes information on ready-reference services; bibliographic search services, including taking and processing a request for a bibliography, National Library of Medicine literature searches, and other computerized search services; and current awareness services. The section on reference sources includes information on indexes in the areas of medicine and health-related fields, e.g., Medical Subject Headings, Index Medicus, International Nursing Index, Hospital Literature Index, Index to Dental Literature, and National Library of Medicine Current Catalog. The manual concludes with an annotated bibliography of the following types of reference sources: directories, drug handbooks, poisoning handbooks, other handbooks and textbooks, dictionaries, and audiovisual catalogs. Sample pages from indexes and reference sources are included throughout. Ordering information and approximate prices as of December 1983 are included for many publications mentioned in the text.
