This series is intended for music educators and features speeches and articles by leaders in music and arts education on a wide variety of current issues. The issue develops notions based on two core events: the teaching of music and the learning of music. Two major concepts are addressed: the identification of a realm of competence acceptable in a practicing music educator; and the construction of a balanced music curriculum. In addressing the topic, "What is a competent music educator?" the following areas are discussed: the entering college student; the teacher preparation curriculum in music education; literary and presentation skills; teaching a total music education program; and field experience. The remainder of the booklet answers the questions: What is the best way to identify competence? What degree of competency is deemed acceptable? and What is a balanced music curriculum? A selected list of Music Educators National Conference (MENC) publications is included (TRS).
