Materials for use by the parents of native Khmer-speaking high school students in a vocationally-oriented bilingual secondary program include a series of home lessons, provided simultaneously in English and Khmer and designed to be done with the high school student. The lessons concern back-to-school night, understanding American schools, the importance of a high school diploma, attendance rules, making a family tree, career orientation, charting the weather, participating in clubs and extracurricular activities, looking at job applications, preparing for a job interview, volunteer jobs, time management, homework, preparing for college, working with a guidance counselor, career planning, knowing the school police officer, how to look for a job in the classified ads, remembering American and native holidays, writing a resume. The materials are intended to help develop a supportive, collaborative relationship between parents and students and to supplement and reinforce the content of the school's English-as-a-second-language curriculum.
