- Summary:

This paper identifies and conceptualizes the problem of perfectionism and describes one treatment approach and its rationale. Sections include: (1) conceptualizing perfectionism; (2) defining perfectionism; (3) symptoms of perfectionism; and (4) overcoming perfectionism - a group treatment approach. The treatment of perfectionism is discussed within the framework of cognitive theory. The organization and running of the group treatment is discussed and agendas are given for each of seven group sessions. The need for a reliable and valid instrument with which to measure perfectionism, its correlates, and the outcomes of treatment is noted. The appendix contains a list of 15 cognitive distortions and brief explanations of each term. References are included. (NB)
