The Arizona Center for Vocational Education, Northern Arizona University, developed a program to train women in nontraditional careers. Since jobs were plentiful in the field, the program aimed to train 25 women in building maintenance. Project leaders established linkages with union apprenticeship programs and local business and industry employers and established an advisory group. They then made provisions for "readiness" training for potential trainees and developed a curriculum for the course of study. In addition, support services for the prospective students were developed. The target audience was single heads of households and homemakers; 20 women were recruited into the project. The six-month program also included work experience. The program was evaluated as a success, and a handbook based on the experience was created to be used as a model. A concomitant program to train five men as office clerks did not materialize; instead, 10 profiles of men successful in nontraditional occupations in the Flagstaff area were prepared. (The profiles, program materials, and the handbook are included in this report.) (KC)
