This adventure alternatives directory identifies organizations and agencies providing programs which link traditional therapeutic strategies with alternative practices to address a range of problems in corrections, mental health, and special populations. Its alphabetical format and user profile key, coupled with a state by state index, make this an invaluable resource for individuals interested in agencies which provide adventure based therapeutic services. The majority of the 108 programs listed use some form of outdoor adventure to provide the participants with concrete challenges to overcome; then, with the aid of trained personnel, program participants are shown the similarities between the seemingly insurmountable challenges experienced in the out-of-doors and those problems which exist for them in their particular situations. Thus, through adventurous activities, metaphorical associations, and trained staff, these programs are exploring alternative paradigms to traditional therapeutic practices. Each entry includes the name, address, and telephone number of the program; the director's name; a user profile; age range; sex served (male, female, coed); and a short description of the setting and the programs offered.
