- Summary:

Major issues that must be addressed by colleges and universities that offer Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs on a distance basis are discussed. Three distance MBAs programs currently in operation are also compared: those of Deakin University in Australia, the University of South Africa, and the University of Strathclyde in Great Britain. To provide a quality MBA degree to off-campus students, it is necessary that external instruction and the student learning experience in the key disciplines and functional areas are of a similar standard to that provided in other recognized MBA programs. Another requirement is that subjects of advanced levels are integrated. Since many distance MBA students are employed in managerial positions they can apply what they learn in their studies. MBA courses in the distance mode must address the issues of interaction between staff and students, group interaction between students, and access to library and computer facilities. Information is provided on key structures of the three MBA programs, including the number of staff, first year student intake, and the program emphasis for each year. Entry requirements for the programs are identified, along with student characteristics. (SW)
