To examine the effects of paternal unemployment on young children, a study was conducted using a sample of 28 primarily white, working-class, intact families with a child aged 3 to 6. Half of the children were boys and half were girls; 16 fathers were working and 12 were jobless. Among the child variables assessed were verbal intelligence, children's perceptions of their own competence, and attendance at school. It was hypothesized that if the quantity and quality of paternal involvement in child rearing were greater with unemployed fathers, their children would be more competent. One major difference emerged between the two subgroups of children: children's perceptions of their own cognitive competence were lower in children of jobless men. The general similarity in competence between the children of working and jobless men meshed with other findings indicating that unemployed men were more involved in child care than working peers but were not more nurturant and did not provide more stimulating activities and resources for the children. A six-page reference list is included. (Author)
