This document addresses the questions of why young people choose teaching as a career and why a portion of those teachers decide to leave by surveying high school teachers in New Jersey. Two hundred forty-three secondary school teachers representing 32 public schools, 21 independent day schools, and 7 independent boarding schools participated in personal on-site interviews. The report divides the collected data into the following topics: (1) demographic description of data; (2) entry into teaching; (3) the worklife of teachers; (4) teachers' views on excellence in teaching; and (5) teaching as a career. Recommendations and discussion are included. A description of the survey methodology, the questionnaire used, a list of schools represented, and a map showing their locations in New Jersey are appended. (MT)
