- Summary:
-
This study reviews literature on the education of teachers, lawyers, engineers, and other professions, providing comparison of the nature of expertise in the various professions and on how it is acquired. Four definitions of expertise are presented--expertise as technical skill; expertise as application of theory; expertise as critical analysis; and expertise as deliberate action--with illustrations showing how these types of expertise are seen in the teaching profession. The meanings and implications of these kinds of expertise for teaching practice are examined, and current methods of fostering expertise are delineated. A nine-page reference list is included.
