- Summary:
-
Alcohol use by college students (N=582) was examined by means of a confidential survey. Mean age of the subjects was 21.8 years, with a range of 17 to 53 years. Results showed 10.3% to be nondrinkers; the greatest percentage of students were found to be light drinkers. Subjects reported the high school years to be the time period when the majority of students started drinking. The top three places where students drink were off-campus parties, at home, and in local bars. A sizeable percentage of students reported experiencing negative effects of drinking, including arguments, missing school, and indiscriminate sexual activity. Students appeared to be saying that they made their own decisions to drink, reporting relatively low peer pressure. For help sources with alcohol problems, friends, parents, and girl- or boyfriends were rated highest. The university's counseling center received the highest rating for on-campus sources for alcohol problems. (ABL)
