This article describes models of literacy education using the intergenerational approach. This approach attempts to teach both parents and children reading and writing, while also improving the parenting and job readiness skills of the parents. Several ongoing projects are described, such as the Kenan Trust Family Literacy Project in Kentucky and North Carolina, the Collaborations for Literacy in Boston, and the Take Up Reading Now program operated by Push Literacy Action Now (PLAN) in the District of Columbia. The article addresses program design issues, family literacy in the workplace, and the possibilities of passing legislation in support of family literacy programs. (KC)
