- Summary:
-
Information on how to evaluate college and university presidents is presented focusing on: (1) purposes of presidential evaluation; (2) guidelines for evaluation (objectivity, criteria, topics and standards, scheduling, constituency consultation, self-assessment by the president, and reporting and use of the evaluation); and (3) post-evaluation processes (review and adjustment of the presidential position description, review of the evaluation process and its results, and review of governing board performance in relation to the presidency). Eight steps involved in evaluation include: evaluations should be conducted in the context of, and subsequent to, a general institutional analysis; anonymous letters should never be accepted by evaluators; and persons engaged in conduct evaluations should be experienced, knowledgeable, and preferably not connected with the institution. A policy statement developed by the Committee on Governance of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and approved by the association membership is concerned with ethics. It sets forth the following standards: place loyalty to the institution above self-interest; ensure that the institution's business and public affairs are conducted in an ethically responsible manner; and seek to provide an environment for implementation of programs that will foster both the social and character development of students.
