-
A certified teacher and preschool parent involvement coordinator working in a parochial school designed and implemented a practicum study designed to increase children's success in school and improve the ability of parents and teachers to work effectively with preschoolers. The practicum intervention involved a commitment from the school's director and teachers; the planning and conducting of orientation sessions; assessment of needs of the preschool children, teachers, parents, and the school; development of a parent-teacher education program; and coordination of volunteer services. Evaluation data indicated that the effort was successful. Parents and teachers worked together and used the skills they had acquired to enhance the skills of the preschool children. They were able to identify age-appropriate activities and use effective discipline techniques. Corporal punishment at the school was eliminated. The emphasis on parent involvement increased the number of communications between home and school. The result was an educational partnership between educators, parents, and community volunteers that improved the achievement and behavior of children in the school. Approximately 110 references are cited. Numerous related materials are appended. (RH)
