This how-to booklet offers specific advice on producing video or slide/tape programs for marketing independent schools. Five chapters present guidelines for various stages in the process: (1) Audio-Visual Marketing in Context (aesthetics and economics of audiovisual marketing); (2) A Question of Identity (identifying the audience and deciding on themes to express the school's personality); (3) Slide/Tape or Video? (advantages and disadvantages of each format); (4) Choosing a Producer (professional vs. in-house production, production styles, and the producer's personality and background in education); (5) Steps in Production and Distribution (initial meetings with the producer to conceptualize the program, script development, interviews with members of the school community, recording of school sounds or music, recording of narration, selection of recorded music, photography of school scenes, editing, display of rough cut, reediting, and final presentation). Each chapter includes a roundtable discussion of its topic by audiovisual producers, and sidebars provide notes from a director of admission, a comparison of video and slide/tape, a description of a producer's experiences, a check list of production steps, and a sample production schedule. An addendum discusses the case of day schools, and reprints of three articles on audiovisual marketing are appended: (1) "The 'Lite' Guide to AV Marketing" (Rick Cowan); (2) "Video Viewbooks" (Mary Landers); and (3) "A Star Is Born: Pre-Production Planning--from the Beginning" (Valerie O'Brien Smith). A directory of slide, video, and film production companies is also appended. (MES)
