Summary

This paper presents a guide for developing and supervising field-based practicum activities to support training of special educators working in rural communities. Particular attention is given to organizing and overseeing practicum experiences that prepare teachers for integrating students with mild learning and behavior problems into regular education programs. The paper uses the graduate teacher training program in special education at Indiana University as an example of how high-quality practicum experiences can be offered to trainees teaching in rural communities. Activities for devising field experiences to support a teacher training program include establishing aims and goals and listing competencies associated with those goals. Field-based projects should be consistent with program competencies and training materials should permit trainees to progress through activities with a minimum of direction. Strategies for supervising field experiences should be flexible enough to accommodate differences among activities and projects. This document includes 12 references, 2 tables, and 2 organizational charts. (TES)
