This manual was developed as part of a program to create an awareness of library services for older adults, dispel myths of aging, and generate innovative programming. The first section offers a profile of aging and presents facts on older Oklahomans, reading habits of older adults, developmental tasks of aging and middle age, information needs and information seeking of older adults, and ageism. A worksheet on myths and stereotypes about aging, a quiz on aging, and a list of terms are also included. The second section covers library services to older adults, including American Library Association guidelines on library responsibilities and service to this age group, service ideas, a needs assessment survey, an ergonomic checklist, and tips for working with older patrons. Programming ideas for older adults and intergenerational audiences are presented in the third section, together with suggestions for better outreach programs, a calendar of holidays and special events, relevant poems and quotes, and publicity ideas. The fourth section includes several bibliographies. The themes include: libraries, reading, and older adults; aging/working with older adults; federal publications; nonfiction materials; novels; magazines and newsletters; children's books with intergenerational themes; packaged program kits; films; and audiovisual materials. The final section lists additional resources such as state and national organizations, publishers, vendors, and miscellaneous products and services. (MES)
