For use in tandem with training videotapes illustrating key concepts and caregiving techniques, this guide discusses ways to establish and nurture the partnership between caregivers and families of infants and toddlers in child care. Special attention is given to issues which may cause tension between caregivers and parents, such as bonding and separation, family stress, and cultural differences. Section 1 discusses the establishment of caregiver-parent partnerships. Section 2 describes ways of helping parents deal with separation in child care. Section 3 presents ways to publicize a child care program. Section 4 focuses on listening and responding to families' needs. Section 5 considers the family in its culture, through discussions of establishing communication, supporting cultural diversity, discomfort about differences, shared experiences and goals, and the challenge of diversity. Section 6 describes the process of involving parents in the program. Discussion focuses on setting the stage for parent participation, parent involvement in center and home programs, parent involvement in centers with large programs, teenage parent involvement, questions about parent involvement, activities for parents and children, and parents' contributions to the program. Sections 7, 8, and 9 discuss conducting business with families, helping families under stress, and handling difficult issues, such as the mistreatment of children. Each section includes lists of points for caregivers to consider and suggested resources. (RH)
