Summary

Contemporary philosophy of education lacks direction, and needs it. The lack of direction is due to skepticism about the foundations of knowledge and values rampant in contemporary philosophy at large, both the Anglo-Saxon and Continental traditions. The remedy is grounded in a renewal of confidence about these foundations that is found in principles most convincingly and comprehensively set out in the philosophy of Bernard Lonergan. The principles of empiricism have largely been rejected because, when set out clearly and distinctly, they self-destruct. Lonergan's principles are vindicated not only by their applicability to a wide range of examples of getting to know, including some that have been a thorn in the side of empiricism; but also by virtue of the fact that their contradictories self-destruct. The business of education is above all to foster those mental capacities that are involved in getting to know what is true and what is good; the business of philosophy of education is to articulate the nature of these capacities, to show why they are at the foundations of the knowledge of fact and value, and to bring out what it is to enhance and apply them.
