The enrollment of minority students is increasing while the pool of minority teachers is decreasing. The model program described in this document was used as a way to increase the number of future minority teachers, particularly blacks, for the classrooms in a large urban school district in Florida. The target group consisted of Florida Future Educators of America (FFEA) students in the district's high schools. Principals were asked to select advisors who would be sensitive to minority students. District-wide activities were planned for parents and students. Issues relevant to minority students were addressed during those activities. The number of FFEA chapters and minority students increased during the implementation of this practicum. During the preceding year, there were 2 FFEA chapters with a total of 48 students, of whom 43 were black. The number of chapters was increased to 11 which includes all of the district's high schools. The number of black students increased to 126. The total number of student participants increased to 263. It is concluded that if emphasis is placed on minority students and their needs, they can be encouraged to participate in future educator clubs. The exposure to teaching that the students receive by being FFEA students may lead to more minority teachers in the district's classrooms. (Author/LL)
