This document reports on a mini-summit meeting on family involvement in education that was held at the Education Center of the Massachusetts Elementary School Principals' Association. The one-day working conference brought together 95 leaders from K-12 schools, higher education and research institutions, parent involvement advocacy groups, and the state department of education. Participants were knowledgeable about barriers to family involvement in education as well as cutting edge strategies for comprehensive family involvement. Comprehensive strategies are those that seek to integrate family involvement initiatives into the ongoing life of the school, promoting a consolidation rather than a proliferation of activities. They merge traditional and nontraditional opportunities for parental involvement, and they call for new ways of thinking about organizing school and community resources. This report documents the meeting's brainstorming session, including possible solutions and a vision of comprehensive supports for family involvement that emerged from the session. Also reported are discussions of future steps for constituency groups and the remarks of the Massachusetts commissioner of education and the president of the Institute for Responsive Education. Appended are the agenda, a list of participants, and an initial list of problem statements. (LB)
