This report argues a case for the use of professional teaching portfolios by educators in higher education, advances a point of view about portfolio issues, and offers examples of portfolio entries. A work-sample-plus-reflection model is presented as a guide for what might be included in a portfolio and why it might be used at a particular campus. Sample portfolio entries based on the model are then presented from teachers teaching courses in a variety of subjects, including introductory philosophy, management, artificial intelligence, psychology, history, and developmental writing. The report concludes with observations and ideas for getting started with using portfolios on campus, including thoughts on portfolio evaluation and using portfolio evaluation for standard setting, and a discussion of the need for peer review in the culture of professionalism. The appendix provides brief examples of campuses already using teaching portfolios together with names and addresses of people to contact for more information. (Contains 20 references.) (GLR)
