- Summary:
-
This paper explores the intimate connection between creative and critical thinking, by arguing that both are inseparable in everyday reasoning. The details of the relationship between creative and critical thinking are worked out in relation to the processes of: (1) thinking through the logic of things; (2) taking command of reasoning and logic; (3) making fundamental assumptions about learning and knowing; (4) understanding the logic of concepts; and (5) understanding the logic of academic disciplines. The details of the relationship are also considered in the context of the logic of language; of questions; of student thinking; of teaching; of reading, writing, speaking, and listening; and of logic itself. The underlying theme of the paper is that intellectual discipline and rigor are involved in originality and productivity, and are inseparable aspects of excellence of thought. It is concluded that intellectual standards and discipline do not stand in the way of creativity, but provide a way to begin to generate it; and that intellectual work develops the intellect simultaneously as a creator and an evaluator.
