Data on Hispanic women in the labor force between 1978 and 1988 show the following: (1) 6.5 percent of the women in the work force in 1988 were of Hispanic origin (3.6 million); (2) the median age of Hispanic women was 26.1 years, 2-5 years younger than Black or White women; (3) 66 percent of Hispanic women participate in the labor force, a higher rate than for Whites or Blacks; (4) Hispanic women have a higher unemployment rate than White women but lower than Black women; (5) only about 37 percent of employed Hispanic women had completed high school; (6) the largest proportion of employed Hispanic women were in technical, sales, and administrative support occupations; (7) the median income for Hispanic women who worked full time, year round, was $14,983, 15 percent below the median income for all women; and (8) about 23 percent of the 4.6 million Hispanic families in the United States are headed by women.
