- Summary:

This reader is designed to accompany any basic textbook in a high-intermediate or advanced Russian course. Its purpose is to provide learners with a wide selection of authentic reading materials and with reading assignments designed to facilitate the development of reading comprehension at the Advanced and Advanced-Plus levels on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages language proficiency scale. This volume contains several features that distinguish it from other Russian readers: (1) it contains no specially written materials because these are already available in a number of other readers and textbooks; (2) it contains no grammar explanations as they are also available in a number of other Russian textbooks and reference grammars; (3) it contains relatively short vocabulary lists because the aim is to teach students how to rely on their ability to guess the meaning of words through the use of various contextual clues. The great majority of selections included in this volume deal with various aspects of life in the Soviet Union as described by Soviet and emigre writers. The basic assumption underlying these materials is that reading means understanding a written text by extracting the required information from it as efficiently as possible. (VWL)
