This document is one of eight in a series of guides designed to help teach and counsel troubled youth. This document focuses on the social skills necessary for on-the-job success. It includes 20 lesson plans that help students learn appropriate behaviors at the work place. The first lesson instructs students on what to wear and bring to work. Several lessons concentrate on employer-employee interactions, instructing students on the results of using swear words, insults, and other problematic language with employers; how to respectfully interact with employers; how to successfully follow employer instruction; what words employees should use with their employers; how to manage confusing employer directions; how to say "yes" to the boss; how to comply with employer instructions; and how to best cope with a difficult employer. Other lessons tell students what to expect of their first days on the job and prepare them to successfully avoid or manage the likely problem situation that could occur; motivate students to anticipate and resolve on-the-job conflict; explain how employees should interact with co-workers on the job; and focus on interactions with customers. One lesson explains pay checks, tax deductions, and basic banking; another discusses the proper use of excuses and absences from work; and a third focuses on how to appropriately resign from a job. Finally, students are trained and motivated to consistently work hard, to learn and follow work-related laws and rules, and to realistically evaluate and improve their work performance. (NB)
