A study was done of faculty job satisfaction and mobility at Michigan State University (MSU) by surveying all full-time faculty and specialists there. A multiple-item survey was sent to each participant during February and March 1991. Responses totaled 1,014, a 51 percent response rate. Most respondents had tenure, were hired between 1967 and 1980, and their average age was 49 years. On analysis of the data, several findings emerged, including the following: (1) most respondents spent 35 percent of their time teaching, 26 percent conducting research, and the rest on other activities; (2) most would like to devote less time to teaching, service, and administrative activities; (3) job satisfaction was high with 73 percent "somewhat" to "very satisfied"; (4) 23 percent were interested in leaving MSU, 21 percent were uncertain about their intention, 11 percent planned to retire, and 23 percent would resign for a similar position at another university; (5) of 44 possible reasons for leaving MSU the top 5 were availability of research funds, research opportunities, reputation of the department, departmental leadership, and salary; and (6) faculty were concerned about a proliferation of administrative positions that isolated them from decision-making. Overall the study concludes that the faculty wants and needs a productive environment for quality teaching, research, and service; a stronger voice in the decision-making process; and while institutional loyalty remains strong, the temptation to exit only lies slightly submerged below the daily activities of the faculty.
