This volume of 66 promising practices in mathematics and science education developed by the 10 regional educational laboratories funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Educational Research and Improvement. The laboratories' collection of programs emerged from a broad-based search, nomination, and review process reaching educators throughout the United States. This guide provides an array of innovative ideas for elementary and secondary teachers. As teachers continue their efforts to increase student achievement in mathematics and science, this guide can serve as a ready reference to model programs and practices that are already being used to improve teaching and learning in these fields. The programs and practices described in this publication range from individual classroom activities to system-wide multi-grade efforts and are categorized according to subject (mathematics, science, multidisciplinary, and technology-centered) and grade level. Each entry contains a general description, teaching strategies and assessment tools, National Center for Improving Science Education and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards which are met by the program, resources and materials needed for adoption, past program sponsors, and contact information. Four appendices contain listings of practices by topic, practices by title, Regional Educational Laboratories, and Regional Eisenhower Consortia and the National Clearinghouse. (MKR)
