Noting that the ability to think critically and creatively can be encouraged even in the very young, this book provides practical strategies and lesson plans for introducing children in kindergarten through grade 3 to the fun and rigors of skillful thinking. The first set of four lessons is designed to start children thinking and to lay the groundwork for future lessons. The strategies emphasized are active listening, articulation, cooperation and questioning. The second set of 15 lessons focuses on starting children to think critically. The activities include organizing and analyzing data, comparing, and contrasting, and classifying. Starting children to think creatively is the focus of the third set of 14 lessons. These strategies include brainstorming, visualizing, personifying, inferring, and using analogies. The last set of five lessons focuses on integrating critical and creative skills to initiate problem-solving and decision processes. Each lesson includes background and rationale, the specific skill addressed, a focus activity, objective, directions and materials, the activity, metacognitive discussion, and a closure task. Contains 110 references. (BAC)
