The set of instructional materials included here consists of reading, writing, and language development worksheets to be used in adult English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) literacy education. Materials are grouped according to four themes; this volume contains units on theme 3 (diary writing) and theme 4 (study skills). Each unit contains an introduction, contents list, teacher's notes, a reading and resource list, and the worksheets geared to three difficulty levels. The diary unit introduces diary writing to students as a way of using language experience to encourage reading and writing. It also includes some examples of other common text types (letters, reports, posts cards), with ways of identifying their features, and worksheets for practicing functional everyday literacy skills. The unit on study skills initiates discussion of different ways of learning and outlines strategies to assist with learning. This section assumes that students with limited educational backgrounds do not transfer skills and knowledge about texts and learning from another language but need to be introduced to them. Several worksheets focus on decoding information in the form of charts, maps, and timetables. The teacher's notes are indexed to specific worksheets. Written primarily for an Australian audience, the materials reflect Australian speech and writing conventions. (MSE) (Adjunct ERIC Clearinghouse on Literacy Education)
