Yvonne Chapman, born in 1940, discusses her family background; her early political awareness and influences; running for Pine Rivers Shire Council, Queensland; Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen; the relative strengths of the National and Liberal Parties in the Coalition state government at that time; her views regarding the Whitlam government; winning the electoral seat of Pine Rivers for the National Party at the 1983 state election; the Coalition split preceding the 1983 state election; parliamentary life and various ministers that she worked with; the Labour Party at that time; women in state parliament at that time; the SEQEB power industry dispute (1985); the 1986 state election; being appointed Minister for Welfare Services, Youth and Ethnic Affairs (1986).

Yvonne Chapman was the National Party Member for Pine Rivers in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 22 October 1983 to 2 December 1989. She was the first woman to be appointed as a Cabinet Minister in Queensland. She later served as the Mayor of Pine Rivers Shire Council from March 1994 to March 2008.
