Manfred Cross speaks about his early family and working life and their impact on his political outlook; the longevity of the Labor Party in office in Queensland in the early 20th century; Vince Gair; the impact of religion on the splits in the Labor Party at the federal and state level; events leading to the fall of the Gair government (1957); tensions between Labor Party MPs and rank and file members over policy; the weighted electoral system implemented by the Labor Party in office and continued by the Coalition after 1957; the state Treasurers of the 1940s and 1950s; the Coalition's readiness to govern after the 1957 state election; his role as a Treasury Department officer; his decision to run for State Parliament and attitude of the Coalition government as employer; his motivation for running in the federal electorate of Brisbane at the 1961 federal election; campaigning for the 1961 federal election; his first experiences in Canberra as a federal MP; Labor's successful campaign (1972); Gough Whitlam; defence procurement; his reasons for embracing Indigenous issues as an MP.
