Ray Ellis speaks about his family background; 'Tichborne Station' and the old family house at Gunningbland; the capture and death of Ben Hall; his schooling; the family moving to a War Service House; his father's WW1 experiences; post war life and family relationships; the family's move to Sydney and the effect of the Depression on people; his political awakening due to hardships; his father's work on the railways during the Depression; family's living conditions; his trade apprenticeship and work as a pattern maker; at a later date, taking on an apprenticeship as a toolmaker; how he became interested in socialism and joined the Communist Party; why he became a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC); his enrolment in the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU), Communist Party of Australia (CPA), Eureka Youth League (EYL); his Technical training (1943); Tom Durst; EYL activities; Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO); his arrests over demonstrations; Korean War Demonstration; his trip to England and employment there; Basketball; Berlin Youth Festival (1951), the shooting of delegates by U.S. troops; Rugby Union; MI5 surveillance; his return to Australia; obtaining employment on Cockatoo Island as a toolmaker; working for the Australian Navy and loss of job due to ASIO intervention; his involvement in organising a Peace Festival; meeting Fleur at Springwood.
Fleur Ellis talks about her family background; her father becoming the Editor of 'Common Cause' (Miners' Newspaper); her early schooling; her move to Lawson during the war years; her memories of this time; her grandfather; moving to West Pennant Hills; the loss of the 'Green Belt'; L.J. Hooker; operations on her foot; her time at Hornsby Girls' High School; after leaving school attending a design course at East Sydney College; becoming an organiser for 'The Eureka Youth League' (EYL); Camp Eureka at Springwood; dancing with Margaret Walkers' Group; meeting Ray at Springwood, their marriage; her earlier work with 'Quality Films', the nature of her work; Cecil Holmes. Ray Ellis then tells a story about the Aboriginal people and their connection with the EYL organisation of dances; families that travelling from around N.S.W. to these dances. They discuss the Youth Carnival (1952) at Hollywood Park; their C.P.A. involvement and Ray's work on the railways; their trip to China after retirement and their experiences in relation to the Tiananmen Square conflict; their touring difficulties and impressions; his consultancy work after retirement; activities after retirement and their political and community involvement.
