A statewide effort to identify stressors in state-level social service institutions in Iowa led one state health agency to establish a stress management project. A pilot program singularly focused on communication as the key tool in reducing stress and managing stress. A longitudinal study surveyed agency employees at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown and completed a pilot study of the communication training with a key representative group from the agency at large. The training sessions were held in 6-hour segments during May and June of 1989. There were seven of these training sessions for a total of 42 hours of training for members of the pilot group. The results and recommendations suggest the importance of communication (interpersonal, intrapersonal, organizational, multicultural, and public relations) in stress management. The results (pre-post-delayed data from survey and critical indicators) tracked the significant impact of communication training on stress reduction and stress management. (Contains 23 references. Appendixes present a list of the goals and objectives of the project, a stress questionnaire, a breakdown of questions according to categories, a progress report on the project, nine tables of data, and a time table.)
