This paper describes the international interdisciplinary academic conference that was a central component of the World Parliament of Religions that convened in Chicago (Illinois) during the summer of 1993. The Parliament was held from August 28 through September 4, and that there were approximately 8,633 official registrants from 56 nations, representing about 125 religious and interreligious organizations and associations. Pointing out that nearly 60 scholars from around the world were selected to present academic papers before the Academy of the Parliament, the paper also notes that there were nearly 600 plenary sessions, presentations, workshops, and religious celebrations at the conference. After presenting a historical overview of events leading to the convening of the first parliament in Chicago in 1893, the paper then provides a historical context for the 1993 conference, examining events and circumstances leading up to the contemporary conference from a communication research perspective. The paper concludes that studying the "new religions" as the conference did assists persons in comprehending contemporary cultural conditions and in predicting the possibilities for future religious developments.
