"Success for All" and "Roots and Wings" are comprehensive restructuring programs for elementary schools designed to make the idea that "all children can learn" into a practical, daily organizing principle for schools, especially those serving many children placed at risk. This book describes the programs in detail, presents the extensive research evaluating them, and discusses the implications of this research for policy and practice. The first chapter, entitled "Success for All: The Promise and the Plan," introduces the program's origins and provides an overview of the program components. Chapter 2, "Reading and Writing/Language Arts Programs," discusses the importance of reading, reading approaches, and reading/writing relationships. Chapter 3, entitled "Tutoring Programs," discusses the roles and significance of tutors and describes the tutoring processes and activities. Chapter 4, "Prekindergarten and Kindergarten Programs," is a discussion of curriculum design and school scheduling. Chapter 5, "Roots and Wings: Adding Social Studies, Science and Mathematics to Success for All," describes two "Roots and Wings" programs; WorldLab and MathWings. Chapter 6, "Family Support and Integrated Services," discusses parent involvement, attendance, intervention, and service integration between community and school. Chapter 7, "Facilitators, Professional Development, School Restructuring, and Networking," emphasizes roles of facilitators and professional development in "Success for All." Chapter 8, "Research for Success for All," discusses evaluation designs and outcomes. Chapter 9, entitled "Success for All, Roots and Wings, and School Reform," concludes the guide with the roles of these two programs. Contains 87 references. (MOK)
