This manual represents the collective philosophy and procedures from Texas educators who are actively involved in the management of successful mentoring and induction programs. It is offered as a guideline for school districts, universities, education service centers, or individuals who are developing or enriching mentoring and induction programs. The document provides a rationale for mentoring programs, including the historical perspective. It provides information on: needs of new teachers; what is working in mentoring programs; evaluation; the various mentoring and induction models; mentor training; working with first-year teachers; journal entries; effective teaching practices; and characteristics and goals of beginning teacher induction programs. The guide includes a glossary and an annotated bibliography that contains sections on mentoring, behavior and discipline management, peer coaching, classroom management; the beginning teacher; and statutory citations from the Texas Education Code. In addition to lists of educators involved with mentoring programs, there are acknowledgements of professional associations and businesses that also provide support. (Contains 13 references, in addition to references included with individual sections of the guide.) (MAH)
