Robustness and power of parametric, semi-parametric, and nonparametric tests of between-group discordance were compared in this simulation study. The empirical Type I error rates and power of nine tests were compared. When data were sampled from the any differences especially favor young women in single-sex Catholic secondary schools, and whether pre-enrollment differences between students account for any sector nonnormality and a partial null hypothesis, the procedure of M. L. Puri and P. K. Sen (1985) and tests that use within-subject ranks were robust. The test developed by B. M. Katz and M. McSweeney (1983) showed erratic Type I error rates and was generally less powerful. A nonparametric extension of the L (M squared) of E. B. Page (1963) was robust and demonstrated consistent power functions. The paper details the development of M squared and provides computational examples. (Contains 9 tables and 29 references.)
