This K-12 framework focuses on educating students in developing competence in addressing the challenges of citizenship in a complex society. The framework addresses what students in Missouri are expected to know and be able to do in the social studies areas when they leave school. The main purpose of the handbook is to serve as a tool for teachers and curriculum writers in Missouri to use in "bridging the gap" between the "Show-Me" Standards (73 standards defining what students should know and be able to do by the time they graduate from Missouri's public high schools) and specific local curricula. The handbook begins with a preface, a list of the "Show-Me" Standards, and an overview of social studies education. Chapters include: (1) "Overview of the Social Studies Framework"; (2) "How to Use the Framework"; (3) "Major Strands in the Social Studies Framework"; and (4) "Good Practices in and Organization of Social Studies Programs." A glossary and list of references are included for further research. Contains references organized in the following categories: general; citizenship and law-related education, geography and global studies; history and Missouri organizations. Appendices provide examples of quality student work in the social studies areas, alternative sequences of social studies courses, and curriculum planning guide sheets. (EH)
