The recent application of Weiner's attribution theory to the career exploration and planning process has resulted in a series of investigations designed to assist college students to develop an optimistic attributional style for career decision making. This paper undertakes a comprehensive review of three attributional retraining investigations that have been conducted in the career development area. The studies provide initial evidence of the efficacy of attributional retraining in career counseling contexts. Suggestions for incorporating principles of attribution theory into the career counseling process are given. A brief introduction to an attributional model of career decision making is made. Ongoing development of the model is intended to provide career development researchers and practitioners with a useful framework for integrating causal attributions for career-related events into the career decision-making process.
